Always a full parking lot at lunch. Maybe everyone who doesn't want to deal w/ metered parking in downtown RO or Ferndale. The "Non-Smoking Restaurant" signs seem so out of place these days. I would have given another star except for the guy at the register, who I'll guess is the owner. I could tell that the waitresses don't like him, they just tolerate him. He glowered at the table next to me. Two business people who had finished lunch and were discussing business plans. Yes, it was the middle of lunch, but there were open tables, so I don't know why he'd be so unhappy they were staying. I was entertained by them interrupting each other, especially the older "I know everything" guy. After I saw how he kept watching them and trying to give them not so gentle nudges to leave, I decided to stay longer, just to keep his blood pressure up. Nothing like playing with the minds of mental midgets for entertainment. The food and service otherwise were decent. Go if you're in a rush so he can turn tables over quickly. Don't go if you plan on staying for a while - you won't be welcome.

Solid breakfast. I had an omlette with bacon, green pepper, onion and american cheese. The bacon was a good consistancy not chewy like it can sometimes be. My husband had sausage gravy and eggs. He very much enjoyed it. I thought the service was what made this place. It was perfect, attentive but not intrusive. We'll be back.

Well being at the ZOO, the crew I was with chose to eat here. . . . I told them about all the other places nearby & worthy..but . . I read plenty of yelp love re: the tuna melt, but I could not part with $7.99 ,which I consider steep for a coney island style restaurant & sandwich So the corned beef sounded good, the gal said it was a big seller. It came out on white bread, not grilled or toasted I asked , why it was not grilled or toasted and she replied its "By Request Only" Then I'd like to request it be grilled please. Moments alter it returns, grilled with 4-6 slices of corned beef. The corned beef was bland-plain-had NO flavor at all, reminded me of the Carl Budding lunch-meats at the grocery store Service was sluggish..to say the least The three of us never got a refill on our coffee's or cokes. Even after finishing our food, our plates were not removed. Will not return. $10.86 for a sandwich & coffee = sticker shock

If you're looking for quick, cheap, diner food then this is a pretty decent place. I ordered a simple breakfast plate with turkey sausage but the sausage was a little over cooked. When you get a standard breakfast plate and one thing is off, it tends to throw the whole meal off, in my opinion. Also, the waitress was friendly but I had to keep asking for refills on my beverages which gets frustrating after a while since I'm a pretty fast drinker. I wasn't thrilled with this place but I'd still come again.

This is a nice place. The food is really good. I had the lasagna and it was great. the beef tips were also good. The atmosphere was pink... like super pink, i tgought of pink ladies from Grease the movie the entire time, i suppose that tge feel they were going fo so i wont complain. The service was decent. I watched other waitresses be a lot more attentive than ours ao i wont dock the restaurant for ine server and she wasn't terrible juat wasnt great. It was cold, made me rush and eat but the rolls were so soft and moist i oasked for another and ahe gave it to me at no extra charge. I like this place and will return for sure.

My mom and I went to Nello's after our mass and I was pretty displeased. I ordered a hot Turkey Sandwich which came on TOASTED bread, which was not said on the menu, and it was difficult to cut, and the mashed potatoes left less to desire to the temptation The waitress brought our plates without cleaning our bowl soups before. I commentated to the waitress that the bread was toasted, and not mentioned on the menu, she offered me white bread and gravy (like i want to move my food on already crowded table). I was expecting her to offer a free meal for me (no, i was able to pay completely), but still... toasted bread with a hot turkey? never heard of it? and not clearing the empty soup bowls before serving dinner? c'mon.. They were slow and had the time to do it, it just made me angry. THEY USED to be good.. I'd rather go to the Avenue. This was just near our church. Finish My Review

This restaurant is one that I frequent often when I take my grandparents to their doctor appointments around the Royal Oak area. The three of us enjoy it a lot because they enjoy other ethic food aside from their native Italian dishes and I enjoy it because of the family friendly low key atmosphere, reasonable prices and great menu items! The decor is like a typical diner "mom and pop" stylings with friendly staff and the establishment is always clean when I visit. The BEST thing on the menu (although all their Greek dishes are stellar) is the Greek salad! The salad, with an option to get chicken or gyro meat on it, has the normal criteria of a Greek salad such as lettuce, feta, tomato, garbanzo beans etc... But the most amazing part is the Greek dressing. It's creamy with that mediterranean zip and they give it to you in a diner syrup bottle so you can either put a little on it or DOUSE it on!! Amazing!! If you want a really good and authentic Greek salad and other Greek dishes, then Nello's is a great choice.

Stopped by for dinner, and every single thing I ate was delicious. Greek salad was so good, the fish and chips was perfection, and the potato skins were downright sinful. The wait staff was above and beyond, every one of the ladies stopped by to refill drinks and clear empty plates. Plenty of attention!! If only it wasn't 30 minutes from my house, I would be in here at least 2-3 times a week!

Don't listen to the K.'s they been brainwashed by their mother. It's mediocre food at best with marginally good service. My grandparent go and they like it, so it's a 'retired person's paradise.' When I go I get harassed by one of the hosts. If you're having a diabetic episode and must get food in you and this is the closest place, I'd say get something from the gas station across the street. Eww, Nello's...

I am becoming a Nello's regular again. The service is great and the food is usually pretty respectable diner fare, breakfast anytime. I never seem to go wrong with a Greek omelet. Good parking and decent location on Woodward, where you are almost guaranteed to see someone pulled over for speeding while you eat.

I needed to kill some time, and my stomach was a-growlin'. Since it was New Year's Eve, and I didn't have a reservation anywhere, I wasn't quite sure where I'd be able to get in, out and get a bite. Driving past Nello's, it seemed like just the ticket. I'd say Nello's is a step above a coney, standard diner or Big Boy -- a solid family eatery. In fact, there were a few tables around me with grandparents, parents and kids all happily munching away together. The service with nice and -- for the most part -- quick. There was a gentleman (a busser? an owner? I don't know...) who was more on top of beverages, dishes, etc. than my waitress herself, which was a little entertaining, but also sort of nice. It's hard to screw up french toast, but this was a little better than most -- and when I asked for my bacon extra-crispy, they obliged. With so many other great stand-out restaurants in the area, I doubt I'll end up here again, but it's reliable enough that I wouldn't recommend against it, either.

They have great food with a great price! I love eating here and they have a nice variety on their menu to choose from. My boyfriend got an omelette and said it was one of the best he has ever had.

Never been to this place despite living two blocks away. A nice place to get cheap breakfast or grab a sandwich. The decor in the place is seriously off-putting though, I think it was because it sort of looks like Bill Knapps on steroids. My grandparents used to take me there all the time and those are some horrible, horrible memories eating dinner at 4 p.m.

No better breakfast (or late night munchie fix) in the area. The service is always great and quick. It's always packed (just try to get a parking spot on Sunday morning) but the line always moves fast. The spinach and feta omelette will cure even the most wretched hangover.

breakfast satisfactory - couple slices bacon, typical shredded hash browns (at least they were crispy) toast a bit underdone, eggs ok. Chicken noodle soup was like broth with some noodles and 1/4" x 1/4" chicken cubes - no flavor at all.

Today, I had breakfast at Nello's with Jeffrey B. and a mutual friend, TS. We met there after church because it was a convenient location, parking was easy and it was a locally owned business. Nello's is large and open with a lot of windows. It's pretty nice inside except for the Saran wrap covering a vent. Oh, and there was a surprise as the hostess is also the hostess at Lily's Seafood when we used to regularly go on Monday nights. The menu is pretty big and its is of the Coney Island/Family Diner kinds of stuff. They have the gyros and the coneys and the open faced turkey sandwiches, fried clams and salads and stuff. We were there for breakfast and they had the normal omelets, pancakes, eggs, breakfast meat and toast. I was really quite disappointed in my breakfast. It came to about $8 for two eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast and coffee. The eggs were cooked perfectly over easy. The bacon was crispy but not burned. However the hash browns were not cooked and were almost raw but slightly burned on the outside. They were not very hot and not very cooked. Also, the toast was not really toasted. It was more like slices of warmed bread with butter. It did not melt the butter nor have the crispness of toast. All of this disappointment for eight dollars. For the same price I could have gone somewhere else and had a really good breakfast. I normally wouldn't have given Nello's a two-star rating but they messed up toast! TOAST! The outrage! Speaking of toast, I have an idea of a place just down Woodward where I'll have breakfast instead the next time.

Apparently, Occupy Woodward took place last Sunday. To clarify, no one was protesting anything but eating at home. Instead, they all wanted brunch. The Lions weren't playing. It was beautiful and unseasonably warm. These two factors made the every trendy brunch place in the D metro have an average wait time of two hours. And this is how we stumbled upon Nello's. Though seemingly primarily for octagenarians, Nello's Eatery is perfectly decent....I just had to delete something about people eating cottage cheese with their mouths open b/c my husband loves Nello's two stars more than I do.... However, after spending nearly an hour waiting in line at Toast (hate. so. much. now.) with at least 20 minutes of additional wait time left (and after being told it would be 35 minutes), I was ready to eat breakfast. In fact, as embarrassing as this is to admit, I was near tears having to leave Toast. I had worked out earlier, and low blood sugar screws with my emotions. Nello's was prompt. We had food on the table in five minutes, despite its crowd. The food itself was just fine. Nothing particularly special, but certainly nothing disappointing. I love my breakfast croissant so much that in the first time in my marriage I finished eating before my husband. My belly was full and I was happy again. My only non-fastidious complaint is that they didn't ask us if we wanted anything else before bringing a check. Otherwise, I will definitely go there the next time I see the masses on Woodward.

I've eaten here a couple of times. Most of the time the wait staff is spot on but occasionally you get one who seems just a bit removed (and you wish she was serving someone else's table, not yours). Over all, the food is quite good. I particularly like the lemon rice soup and I'm fond of the reuben sandwich. I've also had their fried chicken which is okay but nothing to write home about. I do like their mashed potatoes though. They have bits of onion or green pepper in them to perk up the flavor.

We love this place and have been coming here for years. Even if it's been months since we've been in, the staff still knows us and knows our order: tuna melts! The best around. Servers and staff make you feel welcome, even if it's your first time.

I've passed by Nello's many times and have always been curious about this Woodward Avenue eatery! I finally stopped in today for a quick meal with my boyfriend. They tout their home cooked meals on their sign, so I was pleased to see that their food was actually scratch made. My boyfriend ordered the chicken tenders dinner. His tenders were hand battered and delicious. Even the honey mustard that came with it tasted like it was made from scratch. I had the chicken caesar pita with a side salad. The pita was huge, and the salad was a very basic garden salad. The delicious part was the Greek dressing that's house made. Next time I go back I'm definitely getting a Greek salad. The only downside to the restaurant is that service is a tad bit slow. They are incredibly friendly, but pack your patience. I promise it's worth it!

Location location location. It's on Woodward, near I-696. It's has it's own parking lot, with a good size menu, and plenty of tables. The wait staff is experienced and knows their way around the menu. The menu has all the diner classic, salads, lemon rice soup, coneys and burgers. I went with the lemon rice soup, which was okay. The classic Greek salad was a better choice. They give you a greek salad dressing bottle with the salad, and you get to put the dressing on the salad. The menu says the Greek salad dressing is world famous, and it was pretty good. I had a little challenge finding the place, I was almost on top of the restaurant before I saw their sign. But at least you can find parking, sometimes downtown Royal Oak can be tough to find parking.

If you haven't stopped by then you're missing out! The waitresses are professional and kind. The place is very clean and food always fresh. If you do decide to stop in, go on Thursday! You need to try their German tomato soup. Which I make it a priority each week to stop in and get. Prices are a little higher than most but worth it. The only disappointing experience I've had is their salads are made with iceberg lettuce and I asked the waitress to switch it out for romaine.... For an extra dollar. But still got iceberg so she took the dollar off my bill. Other than that no complaints.

They should call it Mellow Nello's because this family restaurant at Woodward and 10 1/2 Mile (or thereabouts) is a laid back, low-key affair that offers consistent service and food for the Woodward Corridor. Staff have their routines downpat, and tea or coffee and refills manifest almost without asking. The owner likes to talk with guests at the front counter when it isn't too busy, and he strikes me as a Mediterranean patriarch with a booming story and a treat for the little ones. He gets a grin out of me every time. My beau has been going to Nello's for years, and they are a stop for weekend breakfasts when every place in town (Mae's, Fly Trap, Toast, OHOP) is packed to the rafters. Nello's seems to move along a bit quicker than those vaunted joints, even if they cater to a different audience. People watching here entertains me like nothing else because a cross section of Royal Oak/Ferndale come slipping through the doors. The restaurant have a full service menu, but I focus on their offerings of a breakfast omelette variety. Healthy options on the side give tasty choices, but in a rarity for me, I tend to stick with the vegetable omelette stuffed with extra spinach and peppers, a side of salsa, and fruit. Hard to mess up an omelette, but they come out fluffy and bright as gold, never too filling or large. The pink décor inside is a bit dated and I'm still not sure what kind of specialty coffee they serve. Coming here is a bit like going to your aunt and uncle's for breakfast, except you aren't expected to clean up afterwards. Regulars like to chat with the waiters and waitresses, and the friendly vibe is just the sort of thing some of us want on a Saturday morning as we recoup from the 9-to-5 rat race. Getting into Nello's parking lot can be a headache with cars parked cheek by jowl, and frequently by drivers who view the lines as guidelines rather than an absolute rule. Vehicles staggered like a drunk's walk make backing out an interesting affair at peak hours.

The location is very conveniently located at 10.5 and Woodward. As a result the prices are HIGH for what you get. Cheese omelette and coffee is 10 bucks without the tip. A better value would be Grecian House, Double EE, Hilton Road, Avenue, Leos downtown, Mae's or Hambo and in about that order. The food is decent enough I suppose and it is clean but the service tends to be crappy. There are plenty of other options on Woodward. I might give it 2.5-3 stars but I have never been wowed by the service whatsoever. I went to cash out out and by the time I returned to the table to leave a tip the waitress had cleared and reset the table.

Been here a lot due to close proximity. I have in the past enjoyed a salmon burger for dinner, but haven't seen it on the menu lately. I did order the French Toast, trying to see if it measures up to other local eateries. The french toast is made of 3 nice thick slices of bread. It was done to a perfect golden brown and dusted with powdered sugar. I appreciated that there was no butter on the toast, but there were packets of butter if you should choose to use it. Of course, I had to get a side of bacon, extra crispy. It was mostly crisp but had some spots that weren't as well done as I'd prefer. All in all, though, it was a nice meal and it was inexpensive!

I felt obliged to give Nello's 5 stars, only because I've been going there since it opened. Nello's is to my family as Monks was to the Seinfeld gang. The owner, Dino, is really caring and because of my suggestion to stock lawash (wrap bread), he started serving wraps. The waitstaff have real personalities and the food is good and reasonably priced. I recommend the omelets. They're all good and all can be customized.

I love Nello's. My family has been coming here since its opening day, and have not looked back, or for another Greek-style diner since. I'm partial to their omelets or quesadillas, but really, in regards to all things on the menu, the kitchen staff is almost always willing to customize staple menu items. The waitresses always remember a face, and so everyone who comes to Nello's more than once, is at some point, basically family.

    (4)
  • Amanda K.

Nellos is my family's cheers. The place where everybody knows your name. It is the quintessential diner with a greek flavor. I always ordered the greek salad with chicken, which was so so good, but way too huge to eat by myself, so it makes a good meal for the next day as well. The waitresses are super friendly and the service is really good. My life wouldn't be the same without nellos.
